Danger. An attack. Traitors.

What?

Your charges are in peril.

Defend them.

Who? Who is in jeopardy?

Both royal lines. The young ones. Danger. Sickness.

Anash?

Yes. And two others. The tunnels. Go.

It matters not who’s with Prince Anash, only that I must race to his side. Stone fissures around me, crackling as I force my early escape. I shouldn’t, not without the royal call to wake, but I must.

If Anash needs me, I go.

Chapter Twelve

Anash

It’s dark behind my eyelids. When I open them, the darkness stubbornly remains. Fragments of a shadowed passage blur by. Snippets of frantic conversation filter in through the haze. I understand precious little.

“Quickly, this way.”

“—waiting ahead. Come.”

“All three. Queen Aurielle and Queen Eilonwy have been notified.”

Mother? My mother’s notified of what?

Oh, poison. We’re poisoned. We’re dying. Right.

The air is damp and cold. A strong, musty odor assaults my nostrils. My skin is clammy. I’m being carried, and we’re rushing, rushing, rushing.

The world fades and restores in a cycle I can’t keep track of. The more I listen, the less my mind can make sense of my surroundings. We lurch to a stop, and my head wobbles on my neck.

Raised voices pierce through the chill.

“Who’s that?”

“Halt!”

“Is that a toga?”

“What is he?”

Whoever holds me grips tighter, squeezing the air from my lungs. I wriggle, gasping.

“You’re hurting him.” Zenith. That’s Zenith!

My heart pounds. Even half-dead, I recognize his voice. I moan and stretch my arm toward the sound.

“I’m here to help,” says Zenith. “My muscles are fresh. Let me take him.”

The shing of swords being unsheathed wisp crisply from ahead. “He’s under our protection. Get back or be killed.”

“No,” I mumble, barely loud enough to hear. “We’re friends.”

“Go then. Hurry.” Zenith again. “I’ll follow.”

But I don’t want to leave him. “Wait.”

No one waits. We burst into motion. Each thud of the guard’s boots jolts my insides and turns my guts into jelly. I want Zenith.

“Stay back.”

“Is that? Is he?”

“A gargoyle?”

My gargoyle.
